Gazing out of the window, I felt like I was in a movie. The baggage carts came trundling to the plane. AMERICA! With a whole new vocabulary like baggage carts! The very paving seemed to look different to my eyes. And the brightness! I peered through the window of the jet drinking everything in. All the talk of the flight had been about what we were going to do when we arrived, what job had lined up for the summer. Now we were actually here and I couldn't really believe it. A whole new continent! US airports continued to fascinate me long after that first visit: the different shops, the fact that at that time you could walk straight to the gate bold as brass and no one would stop you. (For someone used to being sequestered in a whole separate area of Heathrow for Belfast people, this seemed like an extraordinary liberty.) Anything was possible in a place full of such confidence and freedom. I recognise that 9/11 took a lot of this away but that encounter with another way of doing things had already given my spirit wings.
